NEED A PERMIT FIRST?

Start with California driver education.

Driver education teaches the rules. Driver training puts them into practice in a car. Your age determines the permit path; check the DMV requirements below before planning lesson one.

START WITH AGE

Your path depends on how old you are today.

On the standard under-18 path, be at least 16, hold your permit for at least six months, complete driver education and six professional training hours, and log 50 supervised hours—including 10 at night—before the driving test. Applicants over 17½ may qualify for a permit without DE/DT certificates, but cannot take the driving test under that exception until 18.

Follow the standard teen permit path.

Bring proof of completed driver education, or qualifying enrollment and participation in an approved integrated driver education and driver training program. Applicants under 18 need parent or guardian approval. Complete the DMV application, required documents, current fee, vision exam, photo, and knowledge test.

A limited certificate exception applies after 17½.

If you are over 17½ but under 18, the DMV may issue an instruction permit without driver-education or driver-training certificates. Parent or guardian approval still applies. Under this exception, you cannot take the driving test until you turn 18.

This is not permission to drive alone. Follow the DMV supervision rules, and bring your current original permit before any Stallion driving lesson.

Prepare now; apply at 15½.

You must be at least 15½ to apply for a California instruction permit. Use this time to study the California Driver’s Handbook, compare driver-education options, and gather the documents the DMV currently requires.

Driver education is coursework; driver training is instruction in a car. Before any driving lesson, you must have the required valid original permit.

Already licensed? Bring your valid original driver’s license to the lesson. An unlicensed adult learner must obtain and bring a valid California instruction permit before driving instruction. Follow the DMV application, identity, residency, vision, and knowledge-test requirements that apply to you.
